BURRINJA CULTURAL CENTRE

Comedy legend Michael Veitch deploys his talents for turn-on-a-dime mimicry and timing, playing off Simon Oat’s perfect rendition of 40’s radio matinee idol. Two men, charged with turning out daily drama, at war with each other ... This is live comedy at its finest, laughter but with heart, slapstick with a study of character, succinct enough to leave you wanting more.
— Guy Rundle

Michael Veitch is back doing what he is loved for - original comedy. Simon Oats joins him on stage as the perfect matinee idol rogue, dashing former Squadron Leader, Tony ‘The Ace’ Hamilton. Set in a 1940's radio station the original radio plays, Flash Gordon and The Wax Works Museum are performed, but there's even more drama on stage from the 'off-air' shenanigans.

Sharply written, intelligent comedy that crosses politically correct boundaries but manages to hold the audience by their heart-strings. A much-loved fading star is feeling the heat from a dashing newcomer. Talent vs stability, old vs new ... the drama doesn't just go 'live-to-air' - the laughs come from everywhere!

This is without a doubt a terrific night of entertainment with big laughs at a cracking pace.

The golden age of radio is back! If you've been missing the comedy of the Veitch era - it's here ...

Take a couple of hilariously antiquated radio plays; add two somewhat over-stressed actors and you’re on the air with Mystery In The Air! And this week’s plays are two absolute corkers: a cracking horror wax museum story and another of the thrilling space adventures of Flash Gordon, set in that unimaginably far-off year of 1986. Yes, with 50 voices and a pile of live-to-air sound effects all performed by just two frazzled actors, things are jolly going to come to a head. But, as they say, the show must go on, if it can! Come see the fireworks fly for yourself in Mystery In The Air! the show that transports audiences - kicking and screaming - back to the style, the fashion and - let's face it - the sheer political incorrectness of the 1940s. Of course, back in those days, such luxuries as a proper cast and a sound effects department were the norm, but in these economically stringent times, it’s all down to just our boys - costumes, sound effects, scene changes, music, voices - they’ll do the lot. It’s a big ask, and occasionally they might even succeed.

Starring Michael Veitch and Simon Oats, the results are sure to be hilarious.

Presented by Yarra Ranges Council - Healthy Ageing Team - as part of the Seniors Festival 2017 celebrations.

Tune in as comedy legend Michael (Big Micky) Veitch and handsome young blade Simon (The Kid) Oats brush off their double-breasted dinner suits to transport us back to the days before television days when radio was king with Mystery In The Air! Yes, it’s mayhem in the studio as 1947’s most popular weekly radio drama serial, Mystery in the Air! Is about to go to live to air on radio station 3DDDP.

As always, the star of the show is that beloved veteran of radio, the ‘Man of a Thousand Voices’ himself, Clinton Webb. Change however  is afoot !

For the past few weeks, management has seen fit to make Clinton share the microphone with the new darling of the airwaves, dashing fighter pilot ace, former Squadron Leader Rupert Billington-Smythe. Sure, he may be talented, handsome and a considerably younger ratings-winner (not to mention a sure-fire hit with the ladies), but Clinton’s just about had it with this upstart’s complete lack of well … professionalism!

Exactly why management saw fit to foist this brash newcomer onto the airwaves with him is anybody’s guess. Why sometimes he just waltzes in still wearing his dinner-suit from the party the night before! Outrageous!

If only the blighter wasn’t so good at his job! And this week’s plays are two absolute corkers: a cracking horror wax museum story and another of the thrilling space adventures of Flash Gordon, set in that unimaginably far-off year of 1986.

Yes, with twenty voices and a pile of live-to-air sound effects all performed by just two frazzled actors, something tells me that this week, things are jolly going to come to a head. But, as they say, the show must go on, if it can!

Veitch comedy is back! It's 1947 - they're in a radio station but the drama is more off air than on! Inappropriate, naughty and very, very funny!

Mystery in the Air, rules the airwaves as each week thousands of devoted listeners tune in to hear a new and exciting story, written and presented by that old-school stalwart of radio drama, Clifton Ploughman. What will it be this week, ladies and gentlemen? A tale from the Wild West, perhaps? Or maybe a science fiction fantasy set in outer space featuring the heroic exploits of Flash Gordon? How about a ghoulish tale from the waxworks? Whatever the genre, the brilliant Clifton will have his audience transfixed.

And even better, Clifton has recently been teamed up with the newest and brightest star in the radio firmament, the dazzlingly talented ex-fighter pilot war hero, ex-Squadron Leader Tony Hamilton. Sure, he may be a little brash (and occasionally somewhat less than professional), but the ladies love him and the station’s riding high. What could possibly go wrong?

What begins as another day in the studio quickly turns into one of the worst days of Clifton’s life, as he watches his personal and professional worlds start to crumble around him. But, as they say, ‘the show must go on’.

Mystery in the Air is an entirely original play written with the love of the era of live 1940s radio drama in mind, before television sealed its fate forever. Our two characters, Clifton and Tony represent the inevitable clash of the old and the new, and must battle it out, not just for the sake of their own reputations, but that of radio itself!
